Gingerbread beckons you into a world of fairy tales, with engaging stories of people, love, and grand adventures, all grounded in the magical Yukon landscape.
Gingerbread features Kim Barlow playing acoustic and electric guitar, banjo, and cello. She is supported on this recording by the inventive rhythm section of Lonnie Powell on percussion, and Don Benedictson, from Winnipeg, on bass. Andrea McColeman rounds out the core group playing keyboards and marimba and adds her sweet vocals to the mix. Daniel Janke’s kora blends with banjo for an exotic flavour on "Waterfall". This recording features stellar guest appearances by Vancouver’s John Mann, Ford Pier, Steve Dawson, and Jesse Zubot. "Anthony’s Summer" was recorded with Veda Hille & her Musical Epiphany Band.
Some songs off Gingerbread:
Garage Sale is a reflection on the darker side of downsizing: why people leave, what they leave behind. Shorebird is a lilting song about relationships, it rolls along with the waves, blown by the wind, and sparkles like light refracted off water. The title track, Gingerbread, is a reworking of subtext found in the story of Hansel & Gretel. Passengers Gorgeous is a song of hero worship, and getting comfortably over amorous nerves. Anthony’s Summer is a story of adventurous exploration set in the jagged peaks of the Tombstone Mountain range in the Yukon Territory. Goodbye to a Boy is a song of a quintessential northern summer romance. A frolicking banjo piece about an affair peppered with enchanting images. Bicker Fable is a mythical tale of the cello’s creation. Composed and performed for the Women’s Experimental Theatre (WET) Project 'Still Life with Cello'. Like a Baby is a poignant, sad, song about an anorexic cheerleader, co-written by several high school students as part of the Engendered Species Project.
