Volume II offers up a fast-moving cross-section of Northern music. It will introduce listeners to many of theYukon’s great singers, songwriters, and musicians.
Released to celebrate Caribou Records’ fifth anniversary, this compilation has 15 tracks by 11 different artists, many of whom have full-length recordings available. The original Yukon Collection, released in 1995, was Caribou’s first recording project. It has enjoyed a successful life, but is no longer being pressed. If you have one, consider it a collectors item!
A calling card of Northern music, Volume II is a sample of the delicious sounds made in the north. Fitting a loosely folk genre, the music shows influences from Celtic, Appalachian, French-Canadian, country, bluegrass, to contemporary rock. The unifying element of these diverse works lies in the surroundings. The artists all live in the north, they have experienced the uniquely isolating reality associated with an area totally surrounded by wild space. This above all else is an infinitely renewable source of inspiration for those courageous (or wacky) enough to make the journey north. For us who live here, create here, and play here, it is home.
