Mar 27, 2007   LISTEN UP. Spring has Sprung!

Greetings Webfriends! Deliciously, winter is being blown back into the northland, light returns with avengence, and the melt is on! Caribou HQ, located North of 60 can proudly say we got REAL winter, loads of snow, weeks of -30C and we are standing at the other side of it now, embracing the refreshing, replenishing spring season. WHEW! We launched a new CD called Listen UP, its a pan-northern compilation project celebrating youth + culture. It released during the cultural festival of the Candada Winter Games. Featuring traditional throat singing and dene drumming, to singer songwriters, to roots/cabaret, to MC and DJ and rap. Throw in some uber modern throat singing to DJ mix and you get a very exciting recording from North of 60. Greetings Webfans! A quick note here to let you know we have new tour dates online now for Hungry Hill covering Jan/Feb. Also, you can catch Kim Beggs in BC this month promoting her new CD, Wanderer's Paean. She is off to conferences in the USA later this winter. And finally, Indio Saravanja has a late Jan date in BC-if you haven't heard him yet, go see him! Indio is back in the studio mid-Feb to record his second CD, "Travel On". We are pretty excited! Greetings from North of 60 where Caribou HQ is located and we are happy to report that snow exists. It has mostly been warm this winter season, but we have had some chilly spots and are headed to -27C this weekend! Hooray. Hope you all had a wonderful holiday season filled with friends, family and fun! A brief missive here to let you know that Kim Beggs will be heaading out on the road this month for shows promoting her new album, Wanderer's Paean. Its a great collection of old timey tunes, moslty originals. Also, Indio Saravanja will be heading back to the studio for work on his much-anticipated second CD, "Travel On". Seasons Greetings! As we head into the holidays there will be a short break from performances until the new year. Except for Kim Beggs and Kim Barlow who will be performing at SWANK New Years Celebratories right here in Whitehorse at the Guild Hall. Joining the Kims will be Ivan Coyote and Rae Spoon then the dance floor will bust out with DJ DD. As we look back through the year, we celebrate a lot of great music that has been created, amazing shows performed, and awesome tours across this broad land of ours! To everyone who came out to a show, bought a CD, or met an artist at a festival and said hi- we thank you very much. Indie music spreads through the word of mouth and the musical community is an amazing extended family. If you get to the north country up here in the Yukon Territory in Whithehorse be sure to say hi. Otherwise, look for new music to come in the new year from Indio Saravanaja, Hungry Hill and Valle Son! Be sure to check out Kim Beggs' Wanderer's Paean and if Cuban music is your thing, Valle Son's No Se Tire Compay will surely have you thinking warm thoughts. We wish Kim Barlow all the best on her new recording which is being released on Jericho Beach in late winter. We retain her back catalogue items here at Caribou Records if you haven't had the pleasure of Humminah, Gingerbread or luckyburden- check them out! Greetings All, Whitehorse is a blaze of fall, the woods are filled with gatherers, and the road south beckons... Whitehorse is hosting the Art Equinox Festival welcoming PCC panelists for a weekend of great shows highlighting Yukon performers. Kim Barlow will present Keno City: Songs and Film at the Art Equinox festival then away for some dates in Ontario with Kim Beggs and others. Tonight in Edmonton at the Sidetrack Cafe, our 8 piece Cuban band Valle Son will be ripping it up with their original material and arrangements of traditional Cuban songs. Indio Saravanja heads to Ottawa for the Cisco Systems Roots and Bluesfest- he plays the Blacksheep Stage on Sunday afternoon. Kim Barlow will be out west for the Vancouver Island MusicFest in Comox. Hi Everyone, The music is out under the veil of the St. Elias mountain range this weekend. The 14th Annual Alsek Music Festival and the 4th Annual Kluane Mountain Bluegrass Festival are both starting tonight! Hear the Done Gone Stringband, Kim Beggs with Anne Louise Genest, and Kim Barlow playing with Multiplex Saturday afternoon. Hello All, Digging out from the Easter Weekend snowstorm here in the Yukon...wanted to let you in the west know that Kim Barlow is touring the West Coast on a solo trip 'til the end of April and newcomer Indio Saravanja is into the first week of the 30/30 Cross-Canada Tour with songwriter Gordie Tentrees. Also, this just in, Kim Beggs will be playing several Northern dates with two fellow songwriters the third week of April. Check the appearances section for details! Happy Melting from North of 60! Bowen Island Bluegrass Workshops this weekend March 31 & April 1 with members of Hungry HIll just ahead of their appearance at Pacific Contact April 3rd in Burnaby. Indio Saravanja's 30/30 xCanada Tour commences in Ontario April 8 with fellow northerner Gordie Tentrees. Kim Barlow will be on the west coast mid-April for a 10 day solo tour through the islands then into the interior on her way back north. Cuban group Valle Son's new album, no se tire compay, will be available in May and they are coming back to tour Canada this summer! Check back soon for tour dates and details.

Indio is heading out early April for the 30/30 Tour... 30 shows in 30 days across Canada with fellow Yukon Roots Recording artist Gordie Tentrees (www.tentrees.ca). Kim Beggs will be featured on DNTO this Saturday March 25 part of SYL's trip to Whitehorse, Yukon! Anne Louise Genest's old time Done Gone String Band plays a house concert for CBC's Share the Spirit Campaign Sat March 25 for broadcast at later date. Kim Barlow heads out to the Gulf Islands for a solo tour early April. Watch for bluegrassers Hungry Hill appearing at Pacific Contact in early April. Hungry Hill, hailed as the Supergroup of Canadian bluegrass, is just returning from a successful series of showcase events held across western canada and northwestern USA. They head North to the Yukon for a couple of record release shows in Haines Junction & Whitehorse Nov 10 & 11. Join Jenny Lester, Bob Hamilton & Mark Thibeault in welcoming Nadine Landry who replaces Matt King on upright bass and vocal duties. Watch for the herd of Caribou on the road this fall at the 3rd Annual WCMAs, Rendezvous Folk!, OCFF, Alberta Showcase, Arts Northwest and more! We are launching two great new CDs this fall - Cuban group Valle Son's much anticipated "no se tire compay" and introducing Indio Saravanja's self-titled debut. Both acts will hit on the road touring their new releases.


Jun 14, 2005   New Bluegrass from Hungry Hill

The next CD to come out of the Caribou Records stable is from Hungry Hill- Jenny Lester, Mark Thibeault, Bob Hamilton, Matt King, and Gary Markley.Their self-titled debut CD is full of bluegrass and oldtime tunes! They release their CD and kick off a busy summer touring season June 21, 2005 at Smithers, BC. Jumping on board the tour bus is Anne Louise Genest who shares two members of Hungry Hill- Bob Hamilton (mandolin, resonator) and Matt King (upright bass).

If you find yourself in the Yukon this weekend (June 10-12)- head on over to Haines Junction for double festival madness! Catch Kim Barlow performing with Andrea McColeman and Anne Louise Genest appearing with Bob Hamilton and Matt King at the Alsek Fest, and Anne Louise's trio over at the Kluane Mountain Bluegrass Festival. Kim Barlow travels to Edmonton, AB with filmmaker Andrew Connors to perform at nextfest June 3-5! "luckyburden: songs & film" is a live music and film performance about 20th century life in the Yukon silver mining towns of Keno City and Elsa.

Mar 15, 2005   Anne Louise Genest and Dig Your Roots

Anne Louise Genest is heading down to Nelson, BC for the National College Radio Association's Dig Your Roots CD Release Concert on Friday, March 18th! Anne Louise's song "Paradise Road", from her second Caribou release 'Big Dream', was selected to appear on the project. The concert will be broadcast live nationally on participating campus and community radio stations, as well as on the Internet. Kim Barlow's latest album luckyburden was released by Shock Records in Australia/NZ on January 31, 2005. Barlow just departed for a two week tour down under, with guitarist Justin Haynes. She is scheduled to perform 18 shows including several of the country's largest music festivals-see appearance section for full details.

Anne Louise Genest's song "Paradise Road" has been selected to appear on the National College Radio Association's Dig Your Roots compilation CD. One of fifteen artists selected nationally, Genest will be participating in the Dig Your Roots live broadcast March 18, 2005, at charlotte's Pub in Nelson BC. Anne Louise will be appearing with Bob Hamilton.

Kim Barlow’s NEW album luckyburden is a collection of songs about work, love and mixed blessings in Keno City, centre of Yukon silver mining from 1914 – 1989. People immigrated from all over the world to make their lives in the remote, northern, mining town perched high in the Gustavus Range, 400 km north of Whitehorse. Kim Barlow is on a cross Canada tour November 2-22, 2004 promoting luckyburden – see appearances section for more details.
