Caribou News

Hello World Wide Caribou Fans!

This year marks our 10th Anniversary! We are excitedly preparing a sensational array of projects and new albums to celebrate this milestone. Read on for more specific news about artists, touring, and new releases.

This winter marked record snowfalls and some decently cold weather for us North of 60 and we proudly dug and sludged around the streets and trails of Whitehorse doing our part to maintain the Canadian identity. Currently we are basking in the long days of summer, after surviving a very wet and stormy June.

Touring News

Look into the appearances folder and you will notice Kim Beggs, Kim Barlow, Anne Louise Genest, and Hungry Hill all hitting the road in the next few months to promote their various recordings.

Kim Beggs

Kim Beggs, whose Streetcar Heart album launched at the Yukon Arts Centre in mid-December, was accompanied by the Whole Rodeo, an all star band gathered from the deep well of accomplished players in this town, and opened by BC's Moritz Behm, violinist, composer and impassioned performer who also graces Beggs' album. She then travelled to Ontario, Quebec, and Alberta on a 5-week national tour that began with the Winterfolk Festival in Toronto, and included a stop at the North American Folk Alliance held in Montreal. Although not performing at the conference, Beggs took part in the Trade Booth shared by Music Yukon and Caribou Records.

Beggs is about to embark on her summer tour with Nathan Tinkham, (formerly of the Undertakin' Daddies) and will be joined occasionally by Dinah D on upright bass and Moritz Behm on violin. Her touring will take her from Yellowknife, NWT at the Folk on the Rocks 25th Anniversary year, to Kispiox Music Festival in BC, and the Islands Festival with loads of shows between. Checkout the appearances section for more details.

Anne Louise Genest

Anne Louise Genest Trio

Anne Louise Genest Trio

April marks the brownest, drying out time of year here in the North Country, so Anne Louise wisely stepped out to tour AB, BC, and some of the prairies with her cohorts, Bob Hamilton (dobro and mandolin) and Matt King (upright bass). These fine musicians blend voices and instruments around a one microphone set up that lends itself well to the acoustic, old tyme feel of her original songs as found on her latest album, Big Dream.

Anne Louise is touring this summer sharing her band with Hungry Hill; a 5-piece bluegrass group fronted by Jenny Lester, and including Resophonic guitarist/luthier Mark Thibeault and Ross Nickerson on banjo.

Indio Saravanja

Indio Saravanja

Indio Saravanja

Introducing songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Indio Saravanja. If you spent time in the Yellowknife area in the 90s you may have come across him playing in some of the rough and tumble honky tonks throughout the north, and most recently he is spending time in and around Vancouver Island, BC.

The upcoming self-titled debut is a brilliant collection of songs relating to Indio's life experience and observations from his outsiders perspective. Indio left home at 13 to pursue art and found the freedom to pursue the music that welled deep within and demanded to be expressed. Time spent in NYC and Spain writing and performing were not lost on his sensitive, expressive soul. Indio's music will take you through some dark emotional realms, yet leaves you feeling satisfied and optimistic for the future. DON'T MISS THIS ONE!

Hungry Hill

Hungry Hill

Hungry Hill

Welcome to Bluegrass. Welcome to Hungry Hill. This five piece bluegrass band brings together some of the top players of the genre including: fronting singer, fiddler and guitarist, Jenny Lester; Mark Thibeault on Resophonic guitar; Bob Hamilton on mandolin; Gary Markley, Alaskan banjo player extraordinaire; and Matt King holding it down on upright bass. Their debut album was released in Smithers June 21 & 22 at the Old Log Church and so began the 5-week summer odyssey of Hungry Hill. The tour bus plan didn't work out; instead they had a last-minute scramble for vehicular conveyance. Good times.

Look for Hungry Hill in this summer's exciting season of festivals and venues across western Canada! Hungry Hill welcomes Ross Nickerson on banjo for the tour.

Valle Son

no se tire compay

Cuban band Valle Son have approved the mixes of their second CD, no se tire compay, and we are proceeding with the artwork looking towards an early fall release. As part of our 10th Anniversary celebrations, we hope to bring Valle Son on tour in Canada. This album is dedicated to the memories of Rodolfo Gutierrez Quilez and Livan Hernandez Sanchez (road manager and band director / arranger / sax / flute player respectively) whose lives passed but their memories and spirits live on. This recording is full of the upbeat son style of music influenced by jazz and hot Cuban culture. Check back for tour status updates.
