Wow! It has been quite a season for the fine recording artists at Caribou Records!
This winter we launched the follow up CD by the Undertakin' Daddies on January 31 to a sold out house at the Yukon Arts Centre in Whitehorse. We said goodbye to member Nathan Tinkham who has gone on to other projects and wish him well on his career. Devil in the Rearview is moving along nicely and garnering much lauded critical review. People are calling them the country group of the year!
Following the release, I headed south of the border for the 15th Annual Folk Alliance Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. The Undertakin' Daddies were featured as part of the Folk Alliance Canada Showcase line up and did a wonderful job, despite misplacing some gear in a van, and having to walk up 17 flights of stairs! Seems a chronic Folk Alliance problem is elevator melt down. Oh well. Great contacts made and new fans won over.
Following the Folk Alliance Conference, the Daddies returned to Whitehorse briefly and then headed across the pond with Anne Louise Genest and Kim Barlow for a Caribou Records Showcase at Canada House in London, England. Performing wonderful sets to a very appreciative crowd of media and presenters from the London area. We are excited for future opportunities to tour Europe, for which the doors now seem quite open. Congratulations, everyone for a fine job! Kim and Anne Louise arrived in time to participate in the largest peace march in the world, armed with fine English beer and surrounded by thousands of peace loving folk, a fine way to land in the UK!
While I was in Nashville, word got out that Kim Barlow was up for a Juno nomination for Roots and Traditional Album of the Year, Solo Category. This proved out correct and on April 1st, we sent her out with a great Yukon celebration featuring performances by Kim Barlow, Andrea McColeman, and Grrrls with Guitrrrs (also known as Anne Louise Genest, Natalie Edelson, Kim Beggs, and Rachel Wanner).
Kim Barlow's Indie EP, Wilderness Tips was launched at her Juno Awards Party. This CD was recorded by Jay Burr, and reflects the material Kim wrote as a result of participating in the Yukon Journey Project in the summer of 2000. This CD is a pared down recording featuring multi-instrumentalist Kim Barlow and right hand gal Andrea McColeman. The recording took place on stage at the Yukon Arts Centre with their fabulous grande piano and through the wonders of modern technology guest guitarists Ford Peir of Vancouver and Justin Haines of Toronto filled in some gaps.
